Thyroid function tests are basically a number of blood tests which are taken to see the functioning of your thyroid gland. The tests that you need to do are T3, T4, TSH, and T3RU. Sometimes the doctor might ask you to check for antibodies too which is yet another blood test that will show the further details of your glands.

Thyroid is a tiny gland situated right on the lower portion of your neck. It is helped in regulating the mood, energy and metabolism of the body. People suffering from hyperthyroid or hypothyroid can have problems with their immunity system, fall sick often and have weakness inside their body. What is hypo and hyper thyroidism?

The gland is responsible for producing two important hormones in the body, one is the triiodothyronine which is T3 and the other is thyroxine T4. If you are not producing enough of these two hormones and you gain weight, stay depressed plus have less energy, you have hypothyroidism which may stay for lifelong.

In the other situation, if you produce too much of both, you will have hyperthyroidism in which you shed weight, have ache in your bones and get anxiety along with tremors. This condition can last ranging from 2 to 5 years if you take good care.

What to do after the tests?

First and foremost, you need to make sure to get all the tests done that are suggested by your doctor. Once you have the results, the range of numbers will tell if you have overactive glands or underactive ones. The doctor will then provide you with a list of medications mainly the thyroid care ones along with some multivitamins. Since your body will become weak during the process, you need the nutrients to balance out everything.

Once you have taken a month’s dose, you need to follow up with the same tests again to see how the medication is working. Accordingly, the doctor will change the medicines.

Thyroid requires constant care and follow up check-ups through the years.
